Gaza amputee children begin swimming program to rebuild confidence

Amputee children in the Gaza Strip are taking part in a newly launched swimming programme aimed at rebuilding confidence and improving mobility. Organized by a coalition of local disability NGOs and supported by international aid agencies, the initiative provides weekly sessions in a refurbished community pool where participants receive tailored instruction from physiotherapists and volunteer coaches. Since its inception three months ago, the programme has enrolled more than 40 children aged between six and twelve, many of whom have lost limbs as a result of the ongoing conflict and landmine injuries.

Program coordinators say the aquatic environment offers a low‑impact setting that encourages physical rehabilitation while also fostering social interaction among the youngsters. In addition to swimming lessons, the sessions incorporate therapeutic exercises and peer‑support activities designed to boost self‑esteem and promote a sense of normalcy. Officials hope the model can be expanded to other areas of the enclave, providing a scalable approach to disability support in a region where medical resources remain limited.
