Israel opens tenders for West Bank settlement project
Jerusalem – Israeli officials have confirmed plans to develop new housing and infrastructure in the E1 zone, an area east of the city that would link existing settlements to Jerusalem and effectively bisect the occupied West Bank. The proposal, which would create a continuous Israeli presence across the territory, has been met with condemnation from a broad coalition of international actors who argue that it undermines the viability of a two‑state solution.
The United Nations, the European Union and several individual governments have reiterated that the construction would violate international law and exacerbate tensions in the region. Palestinian leaders have warned that the move could trigger widespread unrest, while Israeli authorities contend the development is necessary for security and demographic considerations. Diplomatic discussions continue as the international community seeks to balance settlement activity with efforts to revive negotiations toward a negotiated settlement.
