Lebanon extradites former Syrian army general to Syria
Beirut – Lebanese authorities confirmed on Tuesday the completion of a prisoner transfer that marks the first instance of a Syrian military officer being moved out of Lebanon after fleeing the country following the collapse of President Bashar al‑Assad’s government. The officer, who had sought refuge in Lebanon in the aftermath of the regime’s downfall, was handed over to a multinational task force overseeing the repatriation of former combatants.
The transfer follows a series of agreements between Lebanon and neighboring states aimed at addressing the lingering presence of Syrian ex‑military personnel who arrived during the civil conflict. Officials said the handover was conducted in accordance with international protocols and reflects ongoing efforts to resolve security concerns tied to the influx of former Syrian fighters. The case is being cited as a precedent for future repatriations, signaling a shift in Lebanon’s approach to managing the residual effects of the Syrian war.
