Northern Chile flash floods sweep cars downhill

Heavy rains that began last week in northern Chile triggered widespread flooding and mudslides, sweeping several cars downhill and damaging major roadways. The most affected area was the Atacama Region, where sudden downpours from an El Niño‑associated weather system caused rivers to overflow and saturated soil to give way. The sudden surge of water and debris moved vehicles from the highway into the surrounding valleys, creating a chaotic scene for motorists and emergency responders.

Authorities reported that at least 12 vehicles were displaced, with several others damaged beyond repair.
