South Korea and US cut Ulchi Freedom Shield drill to five days
Seoul announced on Thursday that the upcoming Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercise with the United States will be shortened from its usual 11‑day schedule to five days. The Defense Ministry said the decision reflects a “strategic adjustment” aimed at maintaining operational readiness while responding to evolving regional security dynamics.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield, an annual drill that simulates combined defense scenarios against potential aggression, has traditionally involved thousands of troops from both nations and extensive live‑fire and cyber‑warfare components. Officials noted that the condensed timeline will still cover core training objectives, including command‑and‑control coordination and rapid response protocols, but will limit the scale of certain peripheral activities. The reduction follows recent diplomatic outreach by Seoul to neighboring countries and is intended to balance deterrence commitments with efforts to reduce tensions in the Indo‑Pacific region.
